01. Romance Contest.
Summer 1942. Brussels, Belgium.
American Private First Class Henry Morgan is on a well-deserved 3 day leave. At 24, Henry is a typical boy-next-door, clean cut & always a gentleman. As he ventures into town, he thinks about his care-free days back in Chicago. He finds a cafe for a quick bite to eat. As he finds his way inside, he happens to catch a glimpse of the most beautiful girl he has ever seen, working behind the counter. Henry immediately thought, "She is going to be my wife."
That beautiful brunette is 18 year old, Alexandra Linn. Her family owns the cafe and they live above it. As she finishes up with the other customer, she notices Henry, in uniform, sitting alone. "He must be American...and is quite lovely in uniform," she thought to herself. She felt butterflies in her belly & her heart was racing as she made her way over to him.
"Would you like coffee or tea?"
Henry found himself waiting around the cafe, soaking up her beauty & hoping to ask her on a proper date. He felt silly, as he never was this forward with a girl. Time was moving too quickly for him, so he felt it was now or never.
Meanwhile, Alexandra tried to keep calm, hoping to hide her curiosity.
A little while later, her shift ends & she heads out to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. She noticed Henry follow her out.
"Um, excuse me, miss, hello, my name is Henry Morgan. I'm only going to be in town for a couple of days...would you like to join me for dinner this evening?"
Alexandra, answered without hesitation, "Yes, please! I am Alexandra Linn. It is very nice to meet you. It is a beautiful day. Would you like to go for a bike ride?" Henry held out hand to her & said, "Let's go!"
Henry & Alexandra spent almost all of their waking hours together during his leave. They were head over heels in love. They made a pact not to talk about "that day." Then, in a blink, the day came to say goodbye. They shed tears & promised to write to each other everyday. Wistfully they both wished they could put the time they spent together in a bottle...Both wondered how they would go on without each other."I love you, darling. We'll meet again..."
Soundtrack: We'll Meet Again - Vera Lynn
The short story was inspired by WWII love letters.
